Happy Birthday Occupy!

Occupy Wall Street launched one year ago Monday, September 17, 2011. This past Monday, people converged on Manhattan's financial district to mark that anniversary and continue to raise issues about climate change, crushing debt, and different rules for the bankers and the rest of us. Despite the break up of the physical occupations, it seems that the creativity and commitment that Occupy foucsed and fanned is alive and well and committed to keeping the conversation going.

Shelterforce published several essays on the relationship between Occupy and community organizers/organizations earlier this year, and we followed with interest the move in several cities of Occupiers into supporting unfair foreclosure resistence actions. Occupy the Hood, which focuses on issues of disenfranchised neighborhoods and populations of color has been holding "Hood Weeks" in various cities, with the next planned for New York for the end of October.

A year in, what are you seeing coming out of the promise and tension of the relationship between this larger movement and place-based, base-building work?
